War Game Teeth
I watched an episode of Ken Burns' The War last night, and it's terrific. Really shocking to see that much color footage from the '40s, some of it quite horrific. It seems to be a nicely balanced film, too--no Greatest Generation crap, just young men doing their best under conditions more stressful than most of us will experience in our lifetimes.
I finally finished the third issue of my comics mini-series, so I'm about 40% done. The last time I worked on it was in an airport two months ago, waiting for my kids to come in from Maui. Some of these pages have been written before and just lost. That doesn't bother me all that much, though; I feel like it's probably for a good reason and what ends up in its place is going to be better than the first attempt, or at least as good. Like, I did this one scene where two male characters have this kind of father-son kind of conflict, and the paternal figure is worred that the son figure isn't going to be able to cut it, in the field. A Howard Hawks kind of concern--are you good enough? And I wrote that scene and had planned that that would be followed by a similar scene for the two female characters. I may have even written it. But working on it last night, I only touched on that idea briefly and went somewhere else with it, having the maternal character admonish the younger, out-of-control daughter type, for acting out and wrecking her room, because that was such a male thing to do, to act out like that, and that women didn't need to do that. I wanted the maternal character to speak about the idea of stillness and the power to be found in control, and I felt it came out more interesting that way.
The fourth issue will have some erotic fighting and some non-erotic fighting from a group whose religion is based on teeth.

Philip K. Dick - A Scanner Darkly, as read by Paul Giamatti (fantastic--one of his greatest performances, with multiple voices)

Thanks, dude. :-)
As I watched it, I wondered myself if Hoffman would feel so distraught that he'd go hang it up. He was good again this year, but looks a little more mortal as the years pass.
Still, the Pads ran into a team that was on one of the greatest season-ending runs in the history of baseball and gave a good accounting of themselves without Cameron and Bradley in the lineup. Nothing to be ashamed of.
The Mets, on the other hand, should never show their faces in public again...

There was a lot of second guessing to be done. Why not take Hoffman out after the two doubles? Why leave Peavy in for the 7th when he was giving up about a run per inning and clearly didn't have it? It's sad the bullpen was so good except for the #1, Hall o' Fame guy, but that's baseball. Around the 8th inning I was telling my buddy we could be the "Mets West," and I guess I was right.
I'm actually upset Byrnes signed his extension, because I wanted him to replace Cameron next year. I think he would be a good fit for the Padres, who if nothing else, always value great heart and teamsmanship, and if you don't toe the line, they'll dump you, or tear your ACL.
