Superbad

Woke up this morning and realized, hey, I don't have to work tomorrow. It hadn't really sunk in until then, probably because I don't have any Labor Day plans. Anyway, I had a date last night and saw Superbad after dinner, kind of a spur of the moment thing. It's one of the many movies I was interested in but figured I'd probably just get the dvd later, but I'm glad I went and saw it. Hysterically funny, a definite cut above the usual teen sex comedy. In fact, there was a preview of the Harold & Kumar sequel, and if you're using the first film as a kind of marker for acceptable fare, this is way, way better. Very funny writing, a fairly plausible story (the cops subplot was ridiculous but a lot of fun, courtesy the fine performances of a manic Bill Hader and relatively restrained Seth Rogen--Rogen cowrote this and one of the characters is named Seth), and terrific acting from Michael (Arrested Development) Cera and Jonah (Knocked Up) Hill, as well as Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fogel, the nerdy, hip-hop spouting friend whose life changes with the presence of a fake ID. Cera is wonderful as the sweetly awkward Evan, and Hill is a revelation as the scenery-chewing, roly-poly ball of exposed id, Seth. Great face on that guy--you'll see him for a long time. I laughed constantly throughout this one.
