Weekend

Although Friday was a bit trying, I really have to excuse the kids for a good deal of it just because they had to be tired from their flight, and that definitely affects behavior. The rest of the weekend was more the usual flare-ups and arguments but actuall rather nice. We swam in my condo association's pool every day, plus yesterday my seven-year-old son finally learned to ride his bike properly. Not his fault, really; his mom lives on a street with a big slope, and I really haven't pushed him, but my daughter brought up the bikes and it seemed like a great idea. Lo and behold, it only took a little pushing and instruction and he got it, and they've both been crazy to ride their bikes the past couple days, as in wanting to skip hanging out inside to watch TV, and basically wanting to rush through meals to get back out there. The only bum note was in trying to put air in the tires of my own expensive boke, I blew out a little piece of the valve and couldn't find it, so now I have to take the bike into the shop, somehow cramming it into my Prius. Other than that, though, it was really great that they both enjoy something so natural and easy and healthy.

Watched some of The Last Mimsy, and it's really good so far. Hard to turn off, in fact. Talked to a friend in town for SDCC but we didn't end up hooking up because we both realized it's pretty boring for kids to listen to their dad and his friend talk about comics, and it's about an hour's drive or more each way. It was weird watching the G4 coverage of the Con. It's so bittersweet to see this sexy hostess of Attack of the Show, Olivia, being into comics, and then the comic she's really into is junk like Sinestro Corps. What if you went out with a girl who had no problem with your pop culture obsessions...because she was horny for Glen A. Larson? What if she wanted to put her Space: 1999 toys out on display?
