Kurt

So, a farewell to Kurt Vonnegut. He was a formative writer to me, probably around 13 to 18 or so. I may have reread some of his books since, but it's been quite a while. I know I thought he was funny and startling and wise and not afraid to be mean, and even as an old man he was still cool, which is hard to say about contemporaries like Gore Vidal, John Updike, Norman Mailer and such. If you haven't read anything of his, Slaughterhouse-Five is probably the best place to start.

I just realized that over a week later, I still haven't listened to the Modest Mouse cd I downloaded. Weird how that works. I like the Nico Frozen Borderline 1968-70 set a lot, though.

I'm kind of interested in Criterion's new Eclipse line, though I was disappointed to see the Early Bergman set offered at Amazon for $69.99. The point of Eclipse was to have a cheaper line of dvds from Criterion, offering important works but with less painstaking restoration, in order to get more stuff out there than Criterion's usual measured output, so why the $70 tag? The only people who will buy this are already Bergman fans, so it's defeating the purpose, or at least one of the purposes, of making some of the great directors like Bergman, Ozu and Malle accessible for the more casual dvd purchaser. I was a lock to buy this, but not now. I can't really afford it at the moment.

My MLB2K7 PS2 baseball game is dead. I was playing it last night and it froze after I'd put up 3 runs in the first inning to the other team's zero. I almost never score in the 1st. So I had to shut it off, discovering when I restarted that somehow the last couple games I'd dutifully saved for my team's season hadn't been saved, so that was the second ARGH. Then, replaying one of these earlier games, with a 5-1 lead going into the 6th, it froze again, at which point I lost my shit and pounded on the PS2 with my fist. It must've pushed the spinning disc down onto something, causing a couple scratches, and now it won't start again. That is, the PS2 seems okay, but not the game. Damn anger management.

Been reading Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential and it's excellent! The coolest chef around. He even calls Emeril an Ewok in the book.
