Catching Up

I don't like to include a lot of personal comments in my reviews, as it makes them less timeless (think of timeless in the sense of doesn't-date-as-fast rather than the arrogant definition), so I'll just write here that I'm trying to get my office straightened up and part of that means I review some of these books on my desk.

In case anyone has wondered this, my reviews are intentionally shorter these days mostly for expedience. I seriously just don't have the time I used to to write for hours about comics. And if I have an hour or two, I'd rather be able to write about two or three books instead of one, you know? I don't really have time to read everything I buy, so I've got to conserve time where I can, for reading and movies and other writing and just everything else. Also, I try not to stay up as late as I used to, or at least only once a week. I'm getting old! In fact, while I don't have a hangover it's not like I'm 100% today. I feel okay but I just yawned, and I got at least seven hours sleep last night and it's only 7:03. Wait--7:03! I'm running out of time already!

Oh, and the other reason is that I know that there are good writers like Tom Spurgeon and others who can nail a book in just a paragraph or two, so why not me? I no longer feel much need to talk about plot, so that cuts a review down already, and I also no longer feel much pressure to structure my review like some kind of thesis. 99% of my reviews start with maybe one sentence or thought and just roll on from there. I'm reasonably bright and so far nobody's told me I don't know shit, so I guess it's working okay.

One nice thing about getting older is I really don't care if I'm the first to review something. If it's a really good book, I'll get to it. At this point comics are just one great form of entertainment in my life, and I want to fill that life with other things besides entertainment, you know?

Finally, though I don't check the blog daily for comments, I do eventually see them and will pretty much always respond. In fact, please comment more, so I know I'm not totally alone.

That's cool, Chris.
I'd rather have a short review that gets right to the point than a writer showing off his skills.

Keep up the good work,
Gary Esposito

Thanks, Gary. Of course, getting right to the point is quite a skill in itself. And on the other hand, there are plenty of writers whose digressions and displays of style are more entertaining than getting to the point. Anyway, thanks again.
