This is a documentary from composer and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland, who was smart enough to document much of the short but shining career of the band with a Super 8 camera almost from the beginning. Copeland narrates the story of the band with irony and reserve, maybe a little too much. Not that I wanted a bitchfest, but there's not a whole lot going on here. Though we learn that by Ghost in the Machine, Sting was bringing in fully conceived songs and no longer interested in hashing out arrangements with his bandmates anymore, there's not much dirt, just some interesting, raw performance footage and film of the band goofing around together around the world. They were one of my favorite bands from 1982-1984, so it's fun, and there's additional good stuff in the bonus features, but mainly it's just an efficient, not-revelatory look at the band. The most creative and interesting part of it was how Copeland took the Police music--often the live versions--and deconstructed and remixed it to come up with some very cool backgrounds, often looping Sting's vocals in cool ways. I'd like to download just these tracks without the narration.
