Finally, Some Work

Got back into writing Irregular Joe last night, and again this afternoon. As of this writing I have just five pages left of issue #5, and vow to get this done this week. Keeping the column in mind, I may do some reading tonight for review purposes, and get a bit of a start on the column as well. I generally start writing on Monday, but if I can start a bit earlier that will help out with the other demands.

Started taking a little more of an active hand with CBG to help Alan and Hunter, which is satisfying on some level but a pain in the ass, too. Who wants to tell people about semicolons and that "led" is the past tense of "lead" and all that other stuff that dilutes the effectiveness of their work? It's not fun, but has to be done.

Download Patton Oswalt's Feeling Kinda Patton if you get a chance. I never buy comedy albums but it's hilarious, especially for pop culture buffs, as he actually has very funny riffs on obscurities like the '70s commercials for Stella D'Oro Breakfast Treats.

Listened to The Hold Steady's cd while working, and that may be the last time. The lead singer has an annoying, abrasive, talky voice over music that sort of a little more aggro Southside Johnny or something. A bar band style, with sort of a Boston Shane MacGowan singing. The songs are all dark tales of substance abuse, losers, and seamy sex, from what I could gather, and it bummed me right out.

Also ended up reading The Complete Crumb Comics Vol. 17, which I believe is the last one. I think Fantagraphics will follow the lead from Palomar and other big ticket items and re-collect this stuff in large hardcovers, maybe. I'd get it. So I wasn't even planning on reading this, but got sucked in, and it's really good work, particlarly "Cave Wimp" and "Mode O'Day," but I liked the Aline collaborations and any appearance of little Sophie really adds a sweet dimension that offsets at least some of the usual Crumb kink. The still lifes and commissioned work reprinted were very good as well.

Oh, and I bought The Hulk: Total Destruction for PS2 and played into the wee hours last night. I think Paul Jenkins wrote the basic story. It's a lot of fun, with a wide open environment you can bust up to your heart's content. It's a good stress reliever, and really doesn't have any of that moral conflict inherest in the comics. Here, it's fine if Hulk kills everyone he can, and he's actually rewarded for it with health points. I also like that there's an "Easy" setting, which is challenging enough for me.

It might not be fun, but I can tell you that, good or bad, I appreciate it.

On, second, thought, I, may, have, needed, a, few, more, commas.

There, that should do it.
