Okay, so I'm not an Applebees fan. Chili's is fine, but Applebees is just substandard fare, usually covered in some bad sauce. Still, their commercials are generally okay in a homey way that should appeal to the demographic. Which brings me to the latest commercial, which just annoys the hell out of me. To the tune of Johnny Paycheck's appealing lunkhead anthem "Take This Job and Shove It", we have "Take This Steak and Top It", "with mushrooms, shrimp and cheese!" That's got to be one beat-ass steak that it needs two other food groups and a separate entree on top of it. Hopefully there will be a lunch version soon, where it's all "shoved" between Texas Toast.

I like Applebees. The House Sirloin Steak is tasty without being overly spiced. (I like "plain" foods, so take this all with a grain of salt if you like.) The Asian Chicken Salad thing they have also works for me. But most importantly about both those meals: I don't have to take another insulin shot to cover them. They're low enough in sugar-raising carbs that I'm safe.
So perhaps half my enjoyment of the place is due to diabetic reasons that 98% of your readers don't need to hear about. I'll shut up now.
Chili's will always get my money first. Hate Applebee's.
Hey Augie. That's interesting about Applebees having some lower-in-sugar items. Something I hadn't considered, not that I was telling anyone to boycott the place or anything. Just a lousy commercial. I'm pretty spoiled when it comes to steak; I only order it in a steakhouse or fancier restaurant; i.e. prime beef rather than the grade used in family restaurants. It would be hard to find sirloin there, as it's not as flavorful a cut as, say, New York Strip.
Tip for carnivores: if someone else is paying, order the Porterhouse, which consists of the strip and the filet, all in one big slab of heart-stopping goodness. And it should be cooked in an 1800 degree oven and served still sizzling. Man am I hungry now.
Does anyone have Chipotle Grill where you live? It's basically a burrito place, and they're huge and delicious, with several variations in beans, salsas and other condiments. Six bucks for a pound of food in your hand. I think McDonald's actually owns the chain, but you wouldn't know it. It's not fast food.
