For you non-San Diegans out there, Mayor Dick Murphy announced his resignation yesterday; he'll exit 7/15. He barely squeaked into a second term actually having less write-in votes than city councilperson (and surf shop owner) Donna Frye, but the city charter negated her victory, since she was not entered in the primary. He said it was time to move on and make way for new leadership, and not a moment too soon, as the city is out of money and mired in investigations. Murphy was listed in Time Magazine a couple weeks ago as one of the THREE WORST mayors in the country. It remains to be seen if his leaving is good news or not--if Frye is elected, she will almost certainly blow off the Chargers' stadium proposal, losing the team and the tens of millions of income (and thousands of construction jobs) a Super Bowl would bring in. We won't get another one with the current stadium. The Padres' Petco Park is ample proof a new facility is good for the city. It's not about whether the Chargers win or not, really. Anyway, that's on my mind.
