Good Day, Sunshine

Turning out to be a nice day today. Typical SoCal sunshine, about 67 degrees in the afternoon. Took the kids back to their mom's and walked our yellow Lab with them before leaving. They headed out to the Padres game, and I worked out and then read Entertainment Weekly in a chaise longue by the apartment complex pool, sans sunscreen. Not the best idea, though I didn't stay too long. I guess to many, this would sound like a real nothing day, but it's amazing the pleasure you can take sometimes in small things. The good feeling from exercise and temporarily pumped muscles, a bit of color in the face, a shower and a cool shirt and shorts. Cold pizza and a beer for lunch. I'll probably eat a few hunks of the first attempt pot roast I made last night as well.

I'm actually kind of itching to write some reviews, string a column together, but we'll see how much time I have. Watched some BATMAN ANIMATED (Season One) with the kids Friday and Saturday night--it's funny how two-year-old Ainsley really likes Batman. Also funny that she put a baseball cap on backwards, over her eyes and said she was a "bad guy". Who knows, maybe I'm creating a female comics fan for the future.

Watched SHAUN OF THE DEAD the other night (Blogger lost my initial post on this) and liked it almost as much as I expected to. I'd give it a B+. Far more than just a zombie spoof, it's quite tense at times, and has some fairly touching moments as well. Simon Pegg was perfectly adequate, though not a revelation like seeing Ricky Gervais in The Office was. I'll check Netflix to see if SPACED is available. Also watched a couple more episodes of the first season of THE SHIELD, and goddamn is this a great show. The scene where Vic Mackey turns over in his mind how to save his prostitute friend from a murder rap, finally deciding on a good story that requires her face to be beaten, by him, is brilliant.

Good interview with Jane Fonda in the new Entertainment Weekly. No, I never was a big fan of her acting, but she's had a very interesting life and seems to have come through it with some good perspective on herself and her mistakes. The main feature of the issue is "50 Must-Own DVDs" or something, which starts strong but then loses its way with lots of recent, non-essential releases. The cover story is on LOST, which I didn't read much of because I haven't seen much of the show. Will have to catch up with it on DVD.

Oh, yeah--I was sent the challenge to respond to a meme called something like, "It's Good, But..." That is, five things lots of people you know love but you think are just okay. I decided to eschew THE APPRENTICE and Kanye West, or whatever, to hit closer to what really matters, or doesn't.

1) Jesus (speaking more to his overrated carpentry--unlicensed, too, I might add)
2) Maturity - Yeah, like THAT sounds like fun. Why limit myself?
3) Prince Charles and Camilla - I know, they're sexy as hell and make for good roleplaying games with a significant other, and their furtive, decrepit romance has touched the hearts of everyone, but there's just some indefinable something missing.
4) Las Vegas - I prefer just to gamble with my health.
5) Blow jobs - Give me an eyeless vagina any day.
