Work Journal 2/16/05

I finished my new column for Comic Book Galaxy two nights ago (it turned out pretty good, I think), went to a happy hour with coworkers last night (always nice to end an evening pissing on the side of the road!), and got back on the job tonight, writing Pages 3-5 of Superunknown. A conversation in a car. Not generally the most interesting scenes visually, but I included some shots of Maui, where it takes place, so that should help. I was worried that was one too many pages for the content of the scene, but it came out fine, with tension and love and a little comedy. Randy and Dave at The Fourth Rail seemed fairly interested in Augustyn's BEOWULF coming soon from Speakeasy, so that's a good sign. Oddly enough, I may be reading it for the first time with everyone else, despite the fact that 'Wulf is in Superunknown! I'm not complaining; Brian has been pretty clear about what he's doing with the character and I think everything will mesh just fine. Actually, I'll probably get to read it early, especially as #2 features one of the Superunknown. No worries.

It's early enough that I can go back to watching Lost In Translation and still get a decent night's sleep, so off I go. Oh, and yesterday the Dylan/Band song "When I Paint My Masterpiece" I've heard 100 times suddenly unlocked a way for me to approach a new vampire story, I guess the first horror I'll ever attempt. Nice when things like this happen. I later came up with a humorous vampire idea as well, sort of a MAD Magazine idea, but I doubt I'll really follow up on it.

Here's your Dylan lyric for the day, this one from "She's Your Lover Now":
"She'll be up on a bar soon
With a fish head and a harpoon
And a fake beard plastered on her brow
You better do something quick
She's your lover now."

It's fast for a Dylan song, the urgency putting over some of his most throwaway lyrics, though the overall point that Dylan is taking pleasure at the fact this new guy has to deal with his pain-in-the-ass ex-lover is amusing.
