Sunday Blurry Sunday
David Fiore, true to form, responded to my negative review of his idol Mark Gruenwald's substandard Squadron Supreme series from '83. I don't care if he likes it, but he mischaracterized my review and only excerpted the beginning, least substantial paragraph. He's a smarter guy than that, so I guess I'll just blame this on his weird blind spot when it comes to Gruenwald, his need to intellectualize and gild a childish, nostalgic pleasure from unremittingly putrid garbage. Not that I care much one way or the other. :)
Almost done with the magnicificent The Fortress of Solitude. Not sure just what I'll start next. Also caught up with the last couple issues of Ex Machina, which I'm still really enjoying. Read the Bizarro World hardcover as well and it's okay, about as pretty and forgettable as expected. Evan Dorkin is always reliable, as is Kyle Baker. Beyond that, it's a crapshoot of funny guys doing stuff out of their range, unfunny guys being unfunny, serious guys trying to be poignant in 2 or 3 pages, unsuccessfully...some of it works okay, but it's hard to remember what. It will win awards simply because there aren't many books like it, certainly not with these production values.
Watched some of my Space Ghost Coast To Coast Vol. 1 dvd (I have 2 as well) and...it wasn't very funny. I liked the show in its 15 min. episode bursts. Collected, it's kind of dull. I mean, Bobcat Goldthwait and Dawn Wells are boring whatever else you do around them.
Recommended Listening: Elliott Smith - From A Basement On The Hill (his last album) and Cat Power - Moon Pix. I also downloaded a song from the end of the COMEDIAN documentary I didn't realize I knew and loved - "The Waters of March", as performed by Susannah McCorkle, but I think it's originally an Astrud Gilberto song from the 60s. Also downloaded and listened to a couple Bill Laswell dub albums.
