Character Witness

Just skimmed some msn.com article that Michael Jackson's lawyers may call some celebrities to testify on behalf of Michael, including possible Kobe Bryant. Yeah, because he's really a guy you can trust. I'm sure Letterman and Leno are telling variations on this joke already.

Anyway, I devoted an extra day to the column than expected, but least it will be good AND long. Pretty good BLUESMAN review I did, I think, and unexpectedly, I both finished SQUADRON SUPREME (it only took me 22 years) and did up a big, long, and fairly nasty review of it. Yes, Mark Gruenwald is dead and by all accounts was a great guy. That doesn't make the book any good at all, nor is it sacrosanct. It's this kind of thinking that leads to a mediocre final album by Ray Charles to win awards due to his death and as a kind of lifetime achievement award, when better albums are passed over. I can't see Brother Ray really caring, and I would think his family would agree one has to earn everything in life, as Ray did, so these posthumous awards are really just to make the living feel better. I can't see people really singing along to, or remembering, Usher songs in just five years, either, but whatever.

Watched COMEDIAN again, this time with the Seinfeld/Colin Quinn commentary track, which is more purely entertaining than the movie itself. Quinn's hysterical, and obviously Jerry finds him very funny, too. I felt just a little bad for Orny Adams, whom they make fun of quite a bit, but I must admit the slams are pretty much spot-on, often insightful from Jerry.

Ate $17 in Thai food tonight--a red chicken curry and rice and some fried calamari. A ridiculous amount to spend on myself, but they would only take Visa for order of $10 or more and it was hard to decide. I'll just call it a Valentine to myself and eat PB & J tomorrow or something. Actually, I'm meeting some friends for drinks. One of those guys who invites you out and you think it's just you and him, and then you find out there are two to four others coming along. Luckily, I like the other people, but I absolutely hate that shit. He's pathological about it, and it just kinda makes you feel like your company alone isn't good enough. Anyway, not a bad V-Day at all, no worries or anything.
